How Clinical Trial Matching Works: A Plain-Language Guide
Finding a clinical trial can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. There are tens of thousands of studies recruiting at any given time, each with its own eligibility rules, locations, and phases. Panda Trial was built to turn that haystack into a short, ranked list of studies that actually fit you.
This guide explains, in plain language, how our matching works — and why it is different from a plain keyword search.
Matching is not keyword search
A keyword search looks for studies whose text mentions your condition. That sounds reasonable, but it produces a flood of results that are technically about your condition yet completely wrong for you — the wrong age range, the wrong sex, a location across the country, or a study that stopped enrolling months ago.
Panda Trial takes a different approach. We read each study the way a research coordinator would, and we score how well it fits your profile.
The three things every match is scored on
Every trial you see is scored on a transparent formula, weighted like this:
- Eligibility (60%) — does the study match your condition, age, and sex? This is the most important factor by far.
- Distance (25%) — how far is the nearest study site from you? A great study three time zones away helps no one.
- Study quality (15%) — the study's phase, recruiting status, and whether it runs at multiple sites.
We show you the score behind every match. No black boxes — if a study ranks highly, you can see exactly why.
How we read a study's fine print
The hardest part of trial matching is the eligibility criteria — the dense list of inclusion and exclusion rules written for clinicians, not patients. Panda Trial runs each promising study through a multi-step pipeline that:
- Confirms the study is genuinely relevant to your condition, not just a passing mention.
- Checks the hard rules first — age and sex limits, and whether the study is still recruiting.
- Compares your medications and allergies against the study's requirements.
- Translates the eligibility criteria into plain language you can actually read.
By the time a study reaches your results, it has already survived every one of those checks.
